The Eleanor H. Ayer Foundation

Our Impact

What we’ve built, and where.

In the years since the Foundation started, a handful of real places and programs have come out of it. Here they are.

Carbon Valley Regional Library

The Eleanor H. Ayer Teen Room

A room in the library that belongs to young adults. Somewhere to gather and work on schoolwork, meet a tutor, or sit quietly and read — without being treated as a nuisance for being fifteen.

Libraries are full of provision for small children and for adults. The years in between are where readers are most often lost. This is a small correction to that.

Frederick, Colorado

Ellie’s Garden

A community garden at the former Frederick Elementary School, kept up by volunteers.

It is the least bookish thing the Foundation has done, and one of the most used.

Every year, several schools

Classroom sponsorships

Each year the Foundation selects a number of classrooms to receive direct support — books, classroom supplies, or the money that lets a student go on an educational trip they would otherwise have to sit out.

Teachers know exactly what their room is short of. We would rather ask them than guess.

Alexander Dawson School

Two programs, running each year.

Annual

The Eleanor Ayer Lecture Series

Speakers hosted for the student body to engage them in current affairs, critical thinking, and the question of how they might help solve the world’s problems. The kind of conversation Ellie started wherever she went.

At graduation

The Eleanor Ayer Award

Given each year to the graduating senior who shows a real passion for journalism and the language arts — the subjects that shaped her entire working life.

There is room for more of this.

If you run a classroom, a library or a program that fits what we do, we would like to hear about it.
